Category: Recap

Sometimes I get an urge to just recap my day, sometimes (as you will undoubtedly soon discover) for no good reason. Those recaps go here. The category offers a convenient prompt for those days when I either don’t have much to say, or what I want to say would take too long and has to be left for another day.

Where did my Saturday go?

Last night I was chatting to a friend, and he asked me what my plans were for the weekend. I had a quick and confident answer: “Tomorrow is my day. I’m going to spend it writing, updating my blog, working on my professional site.“. Easy peasy. Except that it is now 10pm, and I have only managed to sit in front of the computer now. So, what happened to my Saturday? And it’s not just today. Everyday seems to just

A coffee shop in my backyard

May 17, 2020 It’s been exactly a week since I did a “recap” post, which should give you a good idea of the pace of life bang in the middle of #lockdown. Honestly, nothing much very exciting happening. But let’s see: A Parisian coffee shop in my backyard I really do have the sweetest kids. I was telling them how much I miss hanging out in coffee shops, and how my work is suffering for it (I do my best

Mother’s Day, 2020

May 10, 2020: Today was Mother’s Day in South Africa. My kids definitely delivered! Micole made me cupcakes (that flopped!! ha ha) and drew me a cute picture of three giraffes. Each giraffe represents one of us, and is coloured in our individual favourite colours. The fact that she drew giraffes at all is an inside-joke: I yell “Giraffe!” as an answer to a “quiz” question before I even hear the question. I’ll do this at least once per quiz

A boring #lockdown update

I’ll give today a 7/10? That seems fair. 1. Projects X, Y and Z Project X is almost ready to go live. And has been for the past week, so that should give you a clue about the frustrations that lockdown can bring. But, we have prevailed, and if all goes well, fingers crossed, I’ll launch it tomorrow, errors and all. It is very much a MVP, but equally good enough to “fuck it, just ship it”, so I’ll iron

So, how will I remember the 2010s?

We all seem to be in a very reflective mood, now that we have kissed a decade goodbye, and I have certainly spent my share of time thinking about the past 10 years, and what lessons I take away from them. For me, it really boils down to four things: my relationship with Craig, my kids, my health and my work. Everything else of significance falls under one of those headings. And most important, there are no regrets – just

Still on holiday, still having a blast. 1. Have had lots of time to spend with the children. Am so grateful for their good natures, their kindness, their willingness to help, and general appreciation. Have had a chance to compare them to some other brats during the course of the holiday, and …like I said…so grateful for the no-problems that the kids give me! Love! #DoingSomethingRight 2. As I do on any holiday I am enjoying, I start planning my

A shopping day, all to myself. Didn’t buy a thing.

1. I have had the work version of cabin fever for the past week, so fooled myself into thinking I want to go to Brooklyn Mall and shop. Luckily, neither kid was interested in joining me, and Craig had errands to run so it was just me. Let’s just give you the TL;DR version: didn’t buy a thing. I think my aversion to shopping was enhanced by the Kondo philosophy of only surrounding yourself with things that bring you joy.

A stolen day, spent in pyjamas

1. Craig took the kids to school today, which is a secret pleasure for me, because it means that – unless I have early meetings – I can start the day on my terms. This is always wonderful. Today, for example, I had a arm-long list of things I needed to do, but no need to leave the house to do them. And since my sister dropped off my kids after school, I had no reasons to get out of
