Seriously?

Oh sure, 2020. Let’s fuck around with everything a bit more. Let’s turn me into a walking cliche. Tonight I find out, via a gentle message in my inbox, that my ex shacked up with someone half my age (and his) while we were still together. And so a family was destroyed. One that I fought so hard to keep. But you can’t compete with youth, I guess. Especially if you don’t know what you are up against, because the

So, how will I remember the 2010s?

We all seem to be in a very reflective mood, now that we have kissed a decade goodbye, and I have certainly spent my share of time thinking about the past 10 years, and what lessons I take away from them. For me, it really boils down to four things: my relationship with Craig, my kids, my health and my work. Everything else of significance falls under one of those headings. And most important, there are no regrets – just

750 words of nonsense

Have you heard of the 750 word writing exercise? It was first introduced by Julia Cameron, in her book The Artist’s Way. The premise is simple: every morning as you wake up, grab a notebook and fill it with 750 words of writing on …whatever it is that your mind wants to say at that point. The prose is not meant to be profound, or even good. It is not meant to be re-read by you, and is certainly not

Is it too late to reflect on 2018?

I think not! Overall, I really enjoyed my 2018. Yes, of course there were some quite severe downs (cancer, death), but overall there were no serious setbacks. I learnt a lot of tough lessons, learnt that I was strong and resilient, worked on my priorities, and did what mattered most. Let’s reflect on the main events and lessons: We lost Zaider. Craig’s father passed away in April. That was obviously a very sad time, and one that brought on a

We just got a puppy!

I grew up surrounded by animals (cats, dogs, fish, tortoises, birds) but for various reasons have never gotten a pet as an adult. The kids have always begged for one, and we always said no. Craig is allergic to cats anyway. But two weeks ago, on the day of my first oncologist appointment, I just got this flash-thought that I needed to get a dog, urgently. I also knew exactly what type of dog it would be: a Boston terrier.

December 29, 2017

Still on holiday, still having a blast. 1. Have had lots of time to spend with the children. Am so grateful for their good natures, their kindness, their willingness to help, and general appreciation. Have had a chance to compare them to some other brats during the course of the holiday, and …like I said…so grateful for the no-problems that the kids give me! Love! #DoingSomethingRight 2. As I do on any holiday I am enjoying, I start planning my

The quest for the perfect beach – Buffelsbaai

Let’s start off by saying that any beach is a perfect beach for me: all I need is a lounger, a beach shelter, a kindle, sunscreen and a hat. With all that, I’m good. I’m definitely not much of an ocean swimmer, and will maybe venture in to dip my toes and crest a wave or two. The experience for me lies in the fresh air, the sun and the not-doing-anything part. So really, I’m not fussy. Not Craig! He

A stolen day, spent in pyjamas

1. Craig took the kids to school today, which is a secret pleasure for me, because it means that – unless I have early meetings – I can start the day on my terms. This is always wonderful. Today, for example, I had a arm-long list of things I needed to do, but no need to leave the house to do them. And since my sister dropped off my kids after school, I had no reasons to get out of

Writing prompt 5/365: Deodorant

I came across this wonderful post by Elen Seidman at LoveThatMax.com. In it, she recounts a loooong list of things that she notices/remembers on behalf of her family, starting with “I am the one who notices that we are running low on toilet paper”. As I said, the list is long. And as a mother, and a “wife”, boy can I identify with this! I am the one who has to remember everything that has anything to do with the
